In “Lados Lados” (“Sides Sides”), André Mendes invites us to enter a frequency that dissipates the most elementary notions of space and time, metaphysical and material, real and imaginary.
By reaffirming his poetic research, interested in creating fictional environments, the artist leads the public to parallel realities of architectures devoid of temporalities and perceptible limits.
In this way, he shows that – between the disenchantments and uncertainties of life – art has increasingly strengthened itself with the indispensable stimulus to sensitivity. Through it, other possibilities of existence make subjectivities possible and necessary.
With a path built on exploring approaches as disparate as the gestural sinuosity of the trace to the immaterial NFT, the artist exposes the versatility in the transit between languages in such a way that fluidity serves as a metaphor for thinking about the works that Mendes presents to us.
The fluency between materials results in works of various dimensions and some forged in the density of blue and others in the chromatic explosion, all becoming alive without losing inseparable links between them. The narratives are many and one; all told in layers and translated into the porosity that shapes the supports and discourses.
From the drawing on paper, lines materialize into pieces produced in metal, from the flat surface of the painting three-dimensional objects come into existence, being sides of the same face. Between the dream and reality, cracks are opened that dilute certainties, giving vent to affection, dream and enchantment so necessary today.
Aesthetics, since its foundation as a discipline, has delved into, among other topics, studies that relate the form and content of works. By taking these elementary principles as instruments of observation, it is possible to perceive that André gave preponderance to drawing in the structure of his research project. He then moved on to other media, such as engraving, painting on different supports, sculpture in different materials, video art, installation, performance until reaching the brand new NFT, a non-fungible token, and his work being the first in this digital mean to be exhibited at MON.
Mendes, from a very early age, was exposed to different sensory stimuli by his mother and father, as well as encouraged to study drawing and live in different cultural environments. From that moment on, the architecture of the places caught his attention. Considering that the poetics of the artists is solidly the result of the experiences that constitute them as beings, it may not be wrong to say that such experiences in the early stages of life had repercussions on the centrality that time and space took on in the artist’s research.
At the entrance, the public is greeted by a large-format mural that reconciles formal and conceptual aspects that permeate its production in its two decades of operation. In this environment, the drawing appears not essentially as a project for the paintings, but appears as a subliminal resource that crosses the artistic procedure and achieves results in the formulation of the fictional spatialities proposed by the work.
In the second environment, structured as an installation, there are recent works emphasizing fluidity as a concept present in the artist’s trajectory. The different media and supports articulate dialogues between the works, renewing the guiding questions of Mendes’ production. The oval figure, recurrent in the paintings, emerged from the flat surface of the canvas in other works, such as in “Horizontes de Evento” (“Event Horizons”), when it appeared in black vegetable resin. Now it gains new three-dimensional modulation in a chassis covered by a canvas tinted in blue tones – the same color used in other works that give life to the repeating element. Conceived as a painting, in the new appearance, the work is leaning against the wall, provoking a game of shadows, conceived in the artist’s paintings that portray his fabled architectures.
In “Antes do Fim” (“Before the End”), the artist also takes from his drawings and paintings the objects of an installation in the space of the Cloître des Billettes Cultural Center, in Paris, in 2018. In the exhibition “Ainda não” (“Not Yet”), held at the Matéria Gallery, in Rome, in 2019, the oval shape was presented in large dimensions, painted in yellow and red, creating a tunnel through which the public was led to pass. As in these individual exhibitions, the artist reiterates the fluidity of the displacements of units that make up his works, turning them into other possibilities of reading his poetics. The lines that give shape to faces are on show in two sculptures produced in metal, but they have already composed engravings, drawings and were part of Wander Art, a project in which the artist was invited to make a mural in a London building.
In the last environment, a synthesis of André Mendes’ trajectory is composed of previous works, with the aim of offering subsidies for a better perception of how the artist’s research remains cohesive today. In this way, we seek to identify points of convergence in the issues discussed in his career. The formal ingredients worked in different possibilities, their most direct influences seen in drawings, paintings and engravings from the early stages, as well as the way in which his analyzes of spatial and temporal occupation are woven into the writing of his narratives are found there in an anachronistic way and without pretensions of a retrospective.
André Mendes once again shares with the public his way of understanding, being, feeling and seeing the world in this exhibition, a perception that creates solid connections and will have much to offer, contributing to the development of the artistic field.
